It hasnt been long since Kings of Leon struck us with Because of the Times, with its elegant radio-friendly guitar-led tunes, which saw them soar in popularity, and this album will only help them maintain the limelight. This is Kings of Leon, reinvented.

The Kings gave us a taste of what was to come by releasing Crawl, second track on the new album. It was very clear to see that the band were looking in a different direction, branching out into darker sounds, which is by no means a bad thing. In Kings of Leons case, this was a very good thing. Crawl is an epic song song, with Calebs now trademark sound giving the song more personality than most bands can muster. After listening to it a few times, you would imagine that the song would get repetitive, but the growling bass and Calebs sensational vocal performance drags you back for more. The opener, Closer, is eerily sinful sounding, but again, Caleb puts his own twist on it to make it an enjoyable experience. The albums lead song, Sex on Fire, is one of their finest songs to date, and cements the bands status as one of the best of this century. Use Somebody shows that the band can produce a ballad indie song without difficulty and goes down well as a stand-out from the darker songs. But, like most albums, this album isnt without its flaws.

Manhattan, as good as the vocals are, it just seems to sink a bit, it sounds more of a filler to a sub-par album, as if they had writers block about half way through the song, but thankfully they get back on trackquickly. Revelry is a heartfelt epic song, the lyrics touching every heart and soul of whoever listens to it, but its a very relaxed song, and the bass and guitar complementing each other perfectly. 17 shows a bit of creativity changes in the band, and although they do their best efforts, theres no escaping that the song doesnt work all too well. Its not that the song is bad, its a mixed bag, out-of-sorts in places, then suddenly rise to the occasion that is Kings of Leons brilliance. The album finishes off with Notion, a strumming great songs and powerful vocals, the sub par, almost grunge-like guitar, I Want You, the speedy Be Somebody, and the closer, Cold Desert, which is a fitting ending.

Only By the Night will meet fans expectations, and theres no doubt, this is a great album, but a bit more polish and consideration into a few of the songs, and this could have been one of THE greats. But for now, Kings of Leon should hold their heads high and pat each other on the back for a well made, and well executed album. Recommended for anyone.

Its been a pretty slow first half of the year for decent single releases in the music industry, but here at Phyrik, we’ve spent quite a while devising a list of good songs from the first half of 2008. Be suprised, be very suprised….

1. Mystery Jets - Young Love

Song of the first half of the year, many a band will come close to toppling this instant classic, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

2. Panic At the Disco - Nine in the Afternoon

A song that you can sing to in two minutes, make you smile and feel good about yourself, its an essential in any library, a song that will lifts anyones mood.

3. Hot Chip - Ready for the Floor

First single on their new album, Ready for the Floor certainly captured peoples attention when it made it popular on the radiowaves, unexpectedly. Totally deserved, the band are finally getting their recognition.

4. The Ting Tings - Great DJ

Chart topping song from the Ting Tings, this is what an indie dance song should sound like.

5. Vampire Weekend - A-Punk

Screeching guitars, funky bassline, powerful vocals, then suddenly a change to bliss. This song is a must have for anyone.

6. Hadouken! - That Boy that Girl

Re-released to coincide with the bands ridiculously un-tagged album, this song is a typical teen whine, but done so in a way that anyone can listen to and shout, for no real reason at all.

7. Dizzee Rascal - Dance Wiv Me

Co-written by Calvin Harris, Harris has been the man of the year. Bringing Kylies comeback to the top, and moving Dizee finally into the limelight, where he belongs. Himself and Kanye are the best rappers around, and full credit to them.

8. The Enemy - We’ll Live and Die in These Towns

The Enemy has made no enemies here, with one of the pop songs of the year, which makes you think what Girls Aloud would be like if they had songwriters like these guys.

9. Biffy Clyro - Who’s Got a Match?

Biffy has been recently compared to the Foos, which, they have a long way to go before that, but until then, heres a taste of excellent riffs from the scot band.

10. Alphabeat - Fascination

Danish duo Alphabeat fascinate us all with their debut song thats too good to ignore. Harmony and melody is perfect, it cant get much better.

11. Mystery Jets - Two Doors Down

THE band of the year so far, the Mystery Jets are leading the way of bringing 80’s music into the 21st century, with a truly rollicking good song.

12. The Futureheads - Beginning Of the Twist

First single on their new album, its a song that MUST be in your library, regardless of what tastes in music you have.

13. Duffy - Mercy

Welsh singer Duffy cashes in with the sudden spark in interest of Jazz-pop after the Amy Winehouse fiasco, she does a great job not to make it cheesy and to turn everyones head away from Ms Winehouse

14. The Kooks - Always Where I Need to Be

A disappointing album, the promotion single is one of their best to date. Simple, energetic, catchy, it ticks al the boxes for a great song.

15. Mark Ronson ft. Phantom Planet - Just

Mark Ronsons Radiohead cover pushes all the right buttons, and changes it so much, that it barely sounds like the original anymore, yet make it sound just as good.

16. Radiohead - House Of Cards

Eerily excellent, downright bloody amazing, Thom Yorke still hasnt run out of new ideas, pushing music to new levels with the most heartfelt song of the year.

17. Weezer - Pork and Beans

The single puts a wet towel over claims that Weezer are splitting, this song shows after 15 years in the biz, they still got it with heavy powerful chords and a chorus that andy band would kill for.

18. The Ting Tings - That’s Not My Name

Their first ever single, its bewildering how they manage to make such an elgant song so blissfully easy. And lyrically, while its not great, why do we chant it anyway!!?

19. Paramore - Riot Business

Emo punk from the all-american Paramore, this does enough to tempt any drawings from Fall Out Boy. Please, dont go there. Paramore are 100 times better than they are.

20. Sam Sparro - Black and Gold

Pop gold from an otherwise crappy album, this song justifies buying the album alone… or.. just go download it on itunes.

21. Madonna - 4 Minutes

Madonnas comeback single featuring JT, shows that age is no barrier in the music industry, with a song to rival Timbalands own.

22. Good Shoes - Photos on My Wall

Underrated band this year. The song is simple, planned, and packs a punch when listened to on full volume.

23. The Feeling - I Thought it Was Over

First single from the new album, the camp piano pop songs are still there, and still go down a treat. They also manage to do things a bit different, cant complain though, its still magificent.

24. The Ting Tings - Shut Up and Let me Go

More of a singles band than full on album epics, the song has had plenty of radio play, and while some people may be getting weary of it, theres not doubt its a hugely catchy song.

25. The Fratellis - Mistress Mabel

In my opinion, one of the weakest songs on one of the albums of the year. If they release My Friend John, its going straight into my top five, no doubt.

26. Panic At the Disco - That Green Gentleman

Excellent melody and songwriting from PATD, who take a total U-turn on their emo style music, to produce an album full of colour, magic and happiness.

27. The Wombats - Lets Dance To Joy Division

Sing-a-long chanting from the Wombats, the song has had decent airplay on MTV2, flagshipping the song. One of the indie songs of the year.

28. Kylie Minogue - In My Arms

Writting by Calvin Harris, you can notice its 80’s electron feel come to you, as Kylies voice powers over it all. Recommended for anyone.

29. We Are Scientists - After Hours

May have been scathed my some media, we think its a fitting single to justify the new album, although, the album itself didnt live up to expectations.

30. R.E.M - Supernatural Superserious

REMs comeback album may have been a bit weak, but they chose the right single to promote it. A typical REM song, that reminds us of why Bad Day was so good.

31. Journey - Don’t Stop Believing

Re-Release from the 80’s band, this song has been many a times played around the country, and it deserves to be.

32. The Courteeners - Cavorting

Highly anticipated single from the Courteeners, well received in the media, and also well recieved here. The melody cant get more perfect than this.

33. MGMT - Time to Pretend

MGMT shot to fame with this song, and its no wonder. The heavy synth electro feel going on here is enough to make you fuzzy inside.

34. The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age Of the Understatement

The second good song, from the mediocre album, this dramatic songs build up has to be heard to be believed. An epic for a soundtrack.

35. Vampire Weekend - Oxford Comma

One of my personal favourite bands of the year, Oxford Comma delivers in areas that most bands cant reach; sheer beat-tastic songs.

36. Mark Ronson ft. Amy Winehouse - Valerie

Mark Ronson struck gold with this Zutons cover, and totally deserved. Brilliant vocals from Amy, the twist on the song is a joy to listen to.

37. Scooter - Jumping all Over the World

I might get stick from this one, but Scooters comeback with Jumping all over the World is just what the dance genre needs, a good kick up the arse with an upbeat, instantly catchy dance tune.

38. Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly - Find The Time

His first single from the new album, its more acoustic ballads for him here, but steers clear of any cliched indie songs, and delivers a great one, with his vocals leading more than the guitar this time round.

39. The Futureheads - This is not the World

The second single from their brilliant new album, its not quite universally appealing, but get your head around the rhythm madness, and you got yourself a shout-a-long that wont escape your head.

40. Scouting for Girls - Elvis Aint Dead

Another pop-tastic piano plink from the scouts, from what is otherwise a disappointing album.

41. Gabriella Cilmi - Sweet About Me

Made famous from a deodrant add recently, this song deserves all the success it has gotten. Pity her album is a letdown.

42. Estelle ft. Kanye West - American Boy

One of Kanyes better work on the latest album, this is what collaborations should be all about. Drawing totally different backgrounds, they make it work, and very well at that.

43. Aya Hirano - Bouko Desho Desho?

JPop Musician/Actress Aya is gunning big this year, with her first worldwide release, and this is a winner. Its blissful, and her voice makes this go down a treat.

44. Scouting for Girls - Heartbeat

One of the biggest suprises of 2008, they came from nowhere with She’s So Lovely, and done it again with this catchy tune.

45. Madness - NW5

Madness return with NW5. Not quite Come On Eileen scale, its much darker, but very addictive piano-led pop from the post-ska era they once held crown to.

46. Kylie Minogue - Wow

Her comeback single after her tough 2 years, this song is up there with one of her best. The only rival in the music business to Madonna, this is a song to cherish.

47. Hadouken! - Game Over

Electro-funk-indie-something or other that makes you wanna scream bloody murder in your head, but not before banging your head to this.

48. The Feeling - Turn It Up

Sunshine pop from the Feeling has been done before, and this time around they stick to the winning formula. It works, and feels fresh enough that you wont easily get sick of it.

49. Be Your Own Pet - The Kelly Affair

Riff-tastic garage rock song from the new queen of… garage rock. You’ll be humming the riff after 10 seconds, guarenteed. And her vocals are out there too.

50. The Last Shadow Puppets - Standing Next to Me

Dark pop song, that some may be comparing to post Beatles songwriting, but to us, it’s a straightforward catchy song.

Ah Hadouken! A band with another meaning in another language, its no suprise that they’ve made it quite big over in Japan. Hadouken! are a four piece band from England, whom say that they dont put themselves into a genre. And its true. Listening to the album, I’m not sure what to classify them in, and to be honest, at times, maybe they dont know what there doing in places either. The best way to describe them would be Indie/Rave/Rap, mixed in with a bit of electronica, very interesting mix of them all.

Back to the album. In theory, this kind of music wouldnt work at all. Hadouken make it work, to a certain extent. The first song, Get Smashed Gate Crash is self explanatory, but as an introduction to an album, it doesnt wow. The song doesnt click in at all, and feels like dissassembled 90’s rave music, with cliched rap music that would make Kanye West frown. Thankfully, this doesnt continue on the album, with That Boy That Girl, an instant Indie classic, which I still cant put into a catagory. Its certainly different, but very well mixed together to make it work. This song has been out for a over a year, but has stood the test of time on it. New song, Game Over, is an interesting add to the album, which is strikingly different to the other two songs, and instantly catchy, revolving about game over in video games(retro ones!) and game over on a night out. Declaration of War could be a nightclub classic if the right remix came along, but for now, it stays on my laptop, but its still quite good nevertheless. You instantly notice the dark plinks on the synth that adds to an epic continuation to the song.

Mr. Misfortune, reminds me of a Biffy Clyro song with rap elements replacing the guitar and vocals, and works well, albeit, it wanes after a minute or so. Crank It Up, another older song, hasnt stood the test of time. Instead, it sounds like a badly made 80’s dance song, featuring Salt n Peppa, which, trust me, its not a good thing. There some decent shoutabouts in the song which makes it bearably to listen to.

The rest of the album itself revolves around nights out, which is never a good thing, its been done too much, but Hadoukens twist on it all makes it listenable, again, thanks to its production value. Its not a bad effort to try something different, but it could have been a lot better. Avoid if you’re not interested in nu rave and indie!

In 2004, after Axl Rose hadn’t produced a studio album in well over ten years, record company Geffen decided to release a Greatest Hits album. It was surrounded by controversy however, as Axel Rose tried to sue Geffen in an attempt to halt the album as he disproved of it and it’s track listings. The suing failed and probably had a reverse effect, by hyping up the album so much, and perhaps caused it to go triple platinum in America.

Well at least Geffen started in the right way, with some classic 1987 Slash. The first track is one that everyone knows and one that Rose would be hard put to find a reason to keep out of the album, “Welcome to the Jungle.” This was the bands first major significant single, and Slash has said he considers it to be the first the band wrote together. It starts off brilliantly, showcasing Slash’s talent straight away, Rose’s voice is powerful at the start of the song, and only really lightens for a moment in the middle. It’s a great listen, and a classic song, a brilliant opener. It’s hard to believe that the song was inspired by a hobo screaming at kids.

Next up was “Sweet Child O’ Mine.” Again it starts off with a great riff from Slash, but this time much lighter. It doesn’t, as many Guns n’ Roses songs don’t, have an actual chorus, but is brilliantly written, the lyrics are great and it has a wicked solo from Slash halfway through. It loses it’s lighter sound towards the end as the song finishes powerfully.

“Patience” is the first song on the album that Slash didn’t co-write and the first track on the album that didn’t come from 1987 as well. It’s a very different type of song from the first two, for one it starts off with whistle, and a soothing acoustic riff. The lyrics are very relaxing at the start, they don’t rhyme much but still have a certain flow and blend in with the music well. It doesn’t have a chorus either but shows a bit of range from the first two tracks.

“Paradise City” takes us back to 1987 and back to a song that Slash co-wrote. It starts off calmly with some well-written lyrics, but quickly gets more powerful and heavier as Slash starts to do his thing. It has another great riff from Slash, and is the first song on the album with an identifiable chorus. It’s long enough song, but it keeps you interested with a powerful chorus, some great solos and a powerful ending.

“Knockin’ on Heavens Door” is one of the later tracks on the album having been released in 1991, and is the first track on the album form “Use Your Illusion II.” It’s the Bob Dylan song that every one has done a cover of, from Bob Marley to Led Zeppelin. Guns n’ Roses add their own touch to it, and released arguably the most successful cover version of the song, as it reached no. 2 in the U.K charts.

“Civil War” (the second song from “Use Your Illusion II”) starts off strange, with, what sounds an old woman claiming that there are some people you just can’t communicate with, but when the singing starts off the lyrics may not be sung loudly, but they are very powerful. The lyrics keep this power throughout the song as Axl Rose adds his own louder different kind of power to the song, with Slash helping him out with his classic heavy guitar style. It’s clearly an anti-war song, that people believe to be dedicated to Vietnam, although it was used years later when Bill Clinton ousted Baby Doc’ from power in Haiti in 1994, but replaced him with someone worse.

“You Could be Mine” is the third consecutive song on the album from “Use Your Illusion II” and returns, if only a small bit, to the style of the first two songs with Slash starting it off with a heavy guitar sound. The lyrics are alright but Slash’s riffs and solos are by far the best part of the song, his solo towards the end in particular was a highlight.

“Don’t Cry” starts off very much like the song “Patience.” The lyrics aren’t quite what you’d call “moving” but are well written and have a sense of feeling about them. Slash adds his bit into this song quite nicely, maintaining it’s mellow sound but still making his own unique input.

And then it was time for “November Rain.” It starts off quite differently then any Guns n’ Roses I can remember hearing. it has a very uplifting kind of start, and 1st class lyrics, and it’s no wonder it made no. 3 in the U.S.A hot 100. It’s undoubtedly one of Guns n’ Roses best songs. It’s quite long at almost nine minutes, but it shows a great range in just one song that I didn’t think Guns n’ Roses had. Slash gets a good, light solo at 4 minutes in, but his most influential part of this is towards the end. There is a change in the song as it gets heavier towrds the end but this change doesn’t at all take away from the song. It shows Slash’s great talent (as again and again this album has) with a magnificent solo and a sensational end to the song.

Next is the classic “Live and let Die.” The song suits Guns n’ Roses style perfectly, and despite not really adding anything to the song they cover it very well. Axl Rose disappoints in a few of the bits in this song, but overall it’s a good song. Although I would recommend The Wings original version over this one.

A very good introductory album to the Guns n’ Roses despite the controversy and legal battle surronding it. It has all of their classic hits, and a few others as well. Being the Classic Rock junkie that I am, I’m going to reccomend buying it to anyone who likes rock.

As an old school Coldplay fan, I was a little apprehensive when it came to their new album. I was quite the Coldplay fan a while ago, but I had become bored of the same old Coldplay sound, and stopped taking any interest in them. So I was looking for one thing in this new album, and that was some range. It has been (and I think still is) number 1. in the charts, so despite the apprehension I had high hopes. The album was surrounded by claims that it’s lyrics were more abstract and visual than before, on top of that one of the band members said he was a little terrified of this album. But on to track 1.

“Life in Technicolor” is alright, it’s a bit boring as it has no real lyrics but some of the bits aren’t bad at all, but it doesn’t say anything about the new album. “Cemeteries of London” is different though, it’s a good song with a better sound than I’m used to, the lyrics are well written and it’s quite catchy with some very nice guitar playing.

The title track is great. The lyrics are very powerful and show a great sense of meaning and belief. You can clearly see the effort that went into making it. It’s no wonder it was so popular, it also manages to mix together Coldplay’s classic sound with a new cool one. “Violet Hill” really surprised me, but in a good way. It showed that Coldplay did have range with a much heavier guitar sound than I think I’ve ever really heard Coldplay play. It’s actually really good and the musical world would be a much beter place if Coldplay produced more songs like this, I’d say their pockets might get a litle bit deeper as a result!!

The last, non-hidden, non-bonus track on the album is”Death and All His Friends.” Which as it turns it out is an alternative name for the album. A more relaxing song all in all, than most of the others on the album, it’s a very soothing, mellow kind of track, which you wouldn’t be able guess from the title track. It has a cool guitar bit half way through where the song gets a bit more intense and less relaxing, but keeps to the start as a very easy track to listen to.

That’s it for Coldplay’s “Viva la Vida” or whatever you prefer to call it, and I must say I’m pleased with it. Sure, it isn’t a complete revolution of Coldplay’s style but with tracks like “Viva la Vida” and “Violet Hil” it’s a big step in the right direction, with the fans liking it too, shown by it’s positoin at no. 1 in the charts and an impressive sale of about 2 million copies already

The very first Death Metal album I bought, and is simply put, what got me into Cannibal Corpse. From the opening screams of “The Time to Kill is Now”, to the graphic lyrics in “Five Nails Through The Neck” to the riffs in “Infinite Misery”, this album is full of the heavy distorted sounds assossiated with Death Metal. It’s well produced, and bass and vocals get a lot of prominance, as do guitars in the heavy riffs littered throughout. This album will surely quench your thirst for bloodshed and mutilation, if you are a fan of death metal anyway. The standout song, personally, was “Five Nails Through the Neck”, with awesome riffs, more of George Fishers gutteral growls, great drums and bass, all blending to form a near perfect song. I would recommend this album to most fans of death Metal, or anyone interested in sampling what Death is all about. The songs are typical Corpse humour too, full of mutilation, zombies and gore, so not one for the faint hearted.

Every once in a while, one great album that blows your mind away comes and gives the competition a nudge. The Holloways, very much does one great album, but fails to move competition. I’m highly recommending this album to any love of music.
The Holloways formed no less than four years ago, and aimed high, playing at Glastonbury in 2005, a year before they released the album, and critics were spellbinded by the groups amazing talent. Theses guys are really that good.
The album starts with, So This Great Britain, which depicts Britains impact on modern day society, which is very much the theme on the album, and grounds them down to the ground, criticizing a lot of aspects of Britain. They give off a punky vibe, minus the punky sound, and replaces it with harmonic voices, and a bassline Sid Vicious would be proud of. Generator, a truly excellent feel-good hit of Summer 2006, but unfortunately didnt take off as it really should have. Any listener who pays attention to the lyrics may be amazed that some of it is quite depressing, and they stress the point how lucky you are in the state your living in, and they celebrate it. The infectious chorus ringing in your ears will make them bleed with happiness, its a song that you wont get out of your head. Dancefloor, perhaps is one of the weaker songs, which sounds a replica song to any other indie dance song, which puts a damper on things. Fortunately, the album picks up with ‘Fit for a Fortnight’, which is a typical song about nights on the town, and the band boast the harmonica that fits in exeptionally well with the jangly guitars, again, the chorus is addictive. ‘Two Left Feet’ must be a sin. It really must. How on earth can they get a violin and harmonica jig into an indie song? They done it, somehow, and it is truly a marvel to behold. A shining example of great songwriting.
Moving onto the second part of the album, ‘Reinvent Myself’ is more to the point and the riff on the two guitars playing are as catchy as it can. ‘Most Lonely Face’ is a slow indie ballad, which shows off there more subtle playing, is slow, its a nice break from the chaos, and not half bad either! ‘Malcontened one’ boasts their spiky guitars and group harmony singing, brilliant stuff.
The last four again, are exellent sing-a-long tunes and are instant hits. This album really shows what talent and enjoying yourself is all about. It all seems to effortless, but if this is the results it gives, I can wait to see until they put effort into it. A gem, and essential to any music fan.

Ah Hybrid Theory, the album that made American rock band Linkin Park. Perhaps it was the powerful lyrics and expression in its songs, maybe it was that Linkin Park’s Heavy Metal sound mixed with a synth was considered unique at the time, or it could have just been that millions of teenage kids wanted to scream along with a downtuned guitar, no matter which of the above you pinpoint to Hybrid Theory’s success there is simply no denying that it was huge. Let me define just big this album was, it outsold, Metallica’s, The Spice Girl’s and Lionel Richie’s best selling albums by give or take a couple of million each, . A feat which I doubt many other debut albums can come anywhere to claiming.

They start off very well with the song Papercut, it isn’t too heavy and is well written, with the lyrics indicating a theme of self-consciousness or paranoia. The guitar riff at the start is good and it compliments the drums quite nicely. “One Step Closer” isn’t great, the lyrics are the first of many in the song that appear to deal with the troubles the lead singer experienced when his parents divorced.

“With You” starts off heavier but actually has more of the mellower bits in album towards the start and turns out to be quite a good, catchy track. The drumming is excellent and it has a sound that was to become signature to Linkin Park throughout this album and Meteora. “Points of Authority” continues this signature sound with some nice use of synth, but on the whole sounds a bit more like a filler in the album, rather than a serious track discussing serious issues, it does however, have a cool, classic Linkin Park ending.

“Crawling” was one of the popular tracks on the tracks on the album, and has some nice lyrics and shows off the talent off Linkin Park impressively. The next big track on the album is by far the best, and have could well have been what propelled it to such success. The start of “In The End” is great, as are the lyrics and the chorus is really something else. It shows powerful emotion through the lyrics and proves you don’t have to scream to prove something. Of all the tracks it is probably that deals with Bennington’s childhood problems the most.

“In The End”was the best track no doubt, but the strangest and most standout track on the album, and probably one of the strangest songs I’ve heard from a modern successful rock band is “Cure For The Itch.” As if the Mr. HAAAAAND intro wasn’t weird enough, the song has no real lyrics, or for that matter instruments, other than the drums. The only sound to be heard in this song was the that of the synth. But despite all this it’s not actually that bad of a song, the use of the synth is truly masterful and is really something to marvel at.

All in all, it’s not a bad buy, I thought that Meteora was a better album but the commercial success here was unrivaled.

It had been quite a while since Eminem had last released an album, and it wasn’t until after two years of releasing the The Marshall Mathers LP did Eminem finally decide to bring out his third and best remembered album amongst most fans, the one that sold 1 million copies in the first week. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I’d like to welcome you all to The Eminem Show.

The wait between albums proved to be irrelevant for Eminem as his album soared to the top of every chart within days. And, as a famous man once said, “The longer the wait, the bigger the comeback.” Wait, no one said that, I just made it up. Or maybe I read it somewhere… Anyway, it doesn’t matter, the point is that Eminem’s absence from the press and from the musical world worked greatly to his advantage when he released his this album. As an old school Eminem fan, I remember the excitement and the hype surrounded by this album. It meant he was back. Coincidentally, he was back only about seven or eight months after 9/11, when it was still a very sensitive issue., and when the American government and it’s policies on terrorism were coming into question.

It was quite fitting that Eminem should stage a comeback at this time, and in the video of his song “Without Me” he quickly made fun of Bin Laden and the recording Bin Laden released, mocking both relentlessly. But now to the album itself, and its opening track, “White America.” This seems to be a reflection on his impact on, as the title suggests, the white population of America. Unlike other songs that he has made discussing this impact, this one focuses mainly on the middle class, whereas the others tended to focus more on lower and upper classes, and the unjust gap between them. When reflecting on this impact he makes gender distinctions on what he has cleverly called Eric and Erica. The age bracket he deals with seems to be teens, with references to TRL and “little Eric” it also takes the piss out of Congress and the State in general. The song itself is, like almost all of the songs on the album, very well written and has a nice beat to go along with it and I’m happy to say that it meets the high lyrical standards, and it’s well composed, with Eminem raging about Congress and cleverly calling it a Democracy of Hipocracy.

Next up is “Business.” I hope you’ll excuse me if I continuously stress the lyrical talent and quality of the songs, but with Eminem it simply cannot be ignored. Another song with great lyrics, It doesn’t deal with anything in particular, it’s mainly just showing Eminem’s funner lighter side, and takes the piss out of rap in general, calling it full of clowns! However, “Cleanin’ out my Closet” is a much, much more serious song,. It deals with the loss of his father when he was just a baby, his relationship with his mother and his relationship with Kim Mathers.

Eminem goes from serious to funny again in literally about three seconds, with the song “Square Dance” hardly being considered his most personal song. It does however meet the high lyrical standard of the album, with the classic Eminem style beat in the background. And I suppose it does deal with 9/11 a little bit, but fails to make any real statement due to it’s lack of seriousness. Eminem goes back to serious with the song “Soldier.” It’s a great song, unbelievably underrated, the lyrics are brilliant. Definetly one of the best songs on the album. It deals with an incident that Eminem had with a bouncer involving his wife, how he thinks he’ll “never be Marshall again” and the effect that rap has had on him, as opposed to the effect of his rap on others. Eminem really pours his heart and soul into this great song, as he says himself towards the end; “Listen to the sound of me spillin’ my heart through this pen”.

Not much else to mention in the album until we get to “Without Me.” Despite being about, number 10. on the album it is largely considered his comeback song. And yes, you guessed it, following the seriousness of the songs before this one shoots right back to funny. Again, he shows his range in rap, with some brilliant lyrics. He really takes the piss in this song, from Batman to Moby, he tries to squeeze everyone into this five minute song. It really does have great lyrics, I even rewound some parts to the song to hear them again.

Then theres “Sing for the Moment.” Eminem’s album goes from funny back to serious again as if it suffered bi-polar. At this stage I’d probably call it ridiculous, only for the songs themselves are simply stunning. In this song he tries to talk about, and relate to, what he feels is his stereotyped listeners, He also discusses his influence on them and raps influence on crime and violence amongst youths. The track finishes with a top-notch guitar solo at the end.

The brilliantly written, slightly misogynistic, highly controversial and highly disputed song “Superman” (the video of which had been banned in several countries due to it’s obscenity) is the only mentionable distraction on the road to the second last track on the album. One of the best songs on the album and by far one of the best rap songs I’ve ever heard, “‘Till I Collapse.”

It’s just like “Soldier” only better, and shockingly even more underrated. The lyrics here are pure genius, absolutely incomparable to any other in perhaps the entire rap industry. Eminem shows why we missed him in the first place with an absolutely stunning song, often rhyming two words at once for long periods of time. It’s one of those songs you’d buy an entire album for, and I’m very disappointed it wasn’t released as a single.

But I suppose you can’t have all the tracks on an album released and with an album like this Eminem was spoilt for choice. If you have any interest in rap whatsoever this album is an absolute must buy, and one that will certainly be remembered long after many other great rap albums will have been forgotten.

Ah The Ting Tings, from humble beginnings a year ago to super-stardom today. The Ting Tings, winners before they knew it themselves, 7 months ago the BBC named them number three in the new Sound of 2008, only to Adele(number one single and album), and Duffy(also number one single and album). It was almost ineveitable to say that the Ting Tings were next in line, as the BBC havent been wrong in previous years, Arctic Monkeys and The Feeling to name a few. The Ting Tings album is a surpisingly good album, despite the odd hiccup in places.
The album is no doubt full of radio friendly single chart toppers, which is both a good and bad thing, and lets not get carried away, the album has many flaws as it rolls onto the last few songs of the album. But lets start with good points. The band have said that they are going to reinvent the pop genre, and they certainly going a different ring to it.

‘Great DJ’, the albums opener is deservedly already a proven winner, as radio coverage and tv coverage has helped propel this song into the limelight. Katie Whites(singer) voice is just and catchy, yet the song is so elegantly simple. ‘Thats Not My Name’, again, proven polularity is addictive drum beating action. The drum ensemble is definately a factor to the song, as the drums wrap itselft nicely around the bass and guitar. ‘Fruit Machine’ delves into slight mediocrity, as Whites voice mimmicks the guitar she plays, an uninventtive strategy that she tries to save with some smart and witty lyrics. ‘Traffic Light’ is an excellent example for reinvention of pop. The song is so off-colour, that its the finest example of song craftsmanship, the lyrics so simple, as the instrument gather complexity as the song progresses, this is a winner in the making. Again, Katies majestic voice gives a lasting impression over the rest of the song. ‘Shut Up and Let me Go’, having already featured on the latest ipod ad, and justifyingly so. The bass riff heads this song, and throws the rest into the background, with such a catchy riff, other pop bands would be scratching their heads thinking how they didnt think of it before.

From here on, the song starts to slide downhill. ‘Keep Your Head’ is a spiky and good song in its own, but the overall quality shows, leaving me think that the rest of this album may be full of fillers. Thankfully, ‘Be the One’, raises the game slightly, with a beautiful, wispy movement on the synth, and compliments the bass brilliantly. A song to remember. ‘We Walk’ takes a different approach, showing that the band can do piano ballads, that changes enough to keep us interested. Although praised, the song isnt all too great, and falls short of good. ‘Impacilla Carpisung’ is the worst song on the album easily, and it sounds like the band ran out of ideas towards the end here, as well as the songs album title, ‘We Started Nothing’.
All in all, this album is very good, very inventive and extremely catchy. More of a singles band rather than an album, this just falls shy of excellent. With time, this band will be one of the big guns.
