After the resounding success of Costello music, The Fratellis had a lot to live up to for their second album. The media pressed that the ‘woeful’ second album of every artist would be likely for The Fratellis second. This is not the case. The Fratellis has met expectations, and thankfully has exceeded it. It can be quite tricky for a band to write an album that preceded concert anthems like Chelsea Dagger and Creeping Up the Backstairs, but the guys decided to go on a slightly different path.
The album begins with a more crunchy, more rock steady song, ‘My Friend John’. The song starts off a bit downbeat, but takes off blissfully. Its less indie rock, more in your face attitude, but with riffs like this, this will definatly be one of the songs of the Summer. It doesnt end there. The Fratellis show that they can write a good piano-style indie pop song to rival that of The Feelings, with ‘A Heady Tale’. ‘Shameless’ continues down the more rock sound and is a sure winner. ‘Mistress Mabel’ is questionable as a single though, it is probably one of the weakest songs on the album, and showed in chart sales when it didnt reach the top 20, unlike previous singles. It one of the few ’samey’ feels on the album to that of the previous album. ‘Stragglers Moon’ has some eery guitar played over a darker voiceover, which adds freshness to this album. Other notable songs include the simple, but ever-so-catchy ‘Babydoll’, and ‘Tell Me A Lie’, which has again, has a more rock sound to it.
The Fratellis has succeeded in a mostly successful album, although ‘Jesus Stole My Baby’ and ‘Lupe Brown’ fail to impress. But despite that, The Fratellis have now cemented themselves as one of the best Indie bands and most entertaining that is around today.
